Course Description

How Sensory Motor Issues Impact Speech
and Language Development

Young children with special needs will benefit when practitioners work together as a cohesive unit to assess and treat the whole child. This transdisciplinary team approach requires pediatric therapists and educators to understand and synthesize knowledge from the fields of speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy and education. Understanding that sensory input drives motor output provides the foundation for this webinar. The way young children take in and respond to sensory information can significantly impact their development and their behavior. Speech-language pathologists and other early childhood professionals need to understand how sensory motor issues can impact speech, language, oral-motor, and social development. This 90 minute webinar will provide an overview of the external and internal sensory systems along with observable characteristics of sensory over-responsivity, sensory under-responsivity and sensory craving behaviors.
Learning Outcomes
  1. Discuss how crawling, toe walking, and core strength are relevant to the SLP’s case history.
  2. List and describe the external and internal sensory systems.
  3. Contrast how sensory over-responsivity, sensory under-responsivity and sensory-seeking behaviors present in young children with special needs.
  4. Summarize how sensory-motor issues can impact the development of speech, language, oral-motor, and social skills.

We will also discuss potential environmental modifications that can be made to provide children with the appropriate amount of sensory input to maximize learning.
Learning Outcomes
  1. Interpret the four functions of behavior and identify the key differences between a behavioral tantrum and a sensory meltdown.
  2. Utilize case studies to understand the sensory explanation behind challenging behaviors.
  3. Integrate sensorimotor strategies and activities into pediatric therapy session and early childhood classrooms to support the development of speech, language, and social skills.
